The government website www.gov.uk provides the following information about the Pupil Premium.
The pupil premium gives schools extra funding to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils from Reception to Year 11.
When first announced in April 2011 schools were given £400 per year for:
- every child registered as eligible for free school meals
- children who have been looked after for 6 months or longer
From April 2012, pupil premium funding was also extended to :
- all children eligible for free school meals at any point in the past 6 years as Ever6
In the 2022 to 2023 financial year, primary schools are receiving:
- £1,385 per pupil receiving free school meals or an Ever6 pupil
- £2,410 per pupil for looked after children who have been looked after for 1 day or more; or are adopted; or leave care under a Special Guardianship Order or Residence Order
The pupil premium is paid to schools as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need.
Service Premium
A premium has also been introduced for children of parents in the armed services. This was £200 in 2011-2012 and rose to £320 for 2022 - 2023. This service premium is designed to address the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
How the funding is used
Ofsted inspections report on how schools' use of the funding affects the attainment of their disadvantaged pupils.
They also hold schools to account through peformance tables, which include data on:
- the attainment of the pupils who attract the funding
- the progress made by these pupils
- the gap in attainment between disadvantaged pupils and their peers
